Message for the Feast of St. Dominic
When St. Dominic sent his friars out two-by-two to engage in the preaching ministry in the major university towns in Europe, his decision was questioned by many who felt it was a foolish thing to do. However, he is reported to have responded to this concern with these words: Hoarded the seed rots; scattered it bears much fruit. Dominic’s abiding belief in a provident God freed him to be creative in his decision-making and trusting in his Friars, despite the ridicule of others. This freedom of spirit, engendered by Dominic himself, enabled him to respond wholeheartedly to the signs of his times and is part of the legacy he has left us.
As we celebrate the Feast of St. Dominic, let us ask for the grace to grow more deeply in our own freedom of spirit as we strive to respond to the signs of our times. May all we do be a holy contribution to the flourishing of our beloved Dominican Charism into the future.
Happy Feast!
