Season of Creation: a challenge to change the way we live
Water is one of God’s most precious gifts. From the waters of creation in Genesis to the river flowing from God’s throne in Revelation, water runs throughout Scripture as a sign of life, renewal and God’s loving presence. During the Season of Creation, the image of living water invites us to reflect on both our spiritual thirst and our responsibility to care for our common home. Jesus says, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink” (John 7:37). He offers water that is more than physical nourishment. It is the gift of the Holy Spirit, flowing within us and transforming our lives. When we receive this living water, we are called to become channels of God’s love, mercy and hope in the world. This includes caring for each other and for our environment. Yet millions of people still lack reliable access to clean, safe water. Rivers, lakes and oceans are pol luted, while droughts and floods increasingly threaten communities and ecosystems. Creation itself is crying out for care. As Pope Francis reminds us in Laudato Si’, water is a fundamental human right and a precious gift that must never be treated simply as a commodity.
The Season of Creation challenges us to change the way we live. We can waste less water, reduce pollution, protect our rivers and streams, and stand alongside communities struggling for access to clean water. Small actions, when joined together, can become powerful signs of hope. As Christians, we are called to thirst for justice and allow God’s living water to flow through our lives. May this season renew our gratitude for water and deepen our commitment to protecting it. May the Holy Spirit, the source of living water, renew the face of the earth. And may we become springs of hope, compassion and life, bringing God’s love to our communities and to all creation.
