JPIC Report: Sisters Champion Climate and Social Justice in East Africa

Kampala, Uganda – The Eastern Zone of the Dominican Sisters Africa is forging ahead with its commitment to two crucial initiatives: climate change and women/girl empowerment. These projects, adopted during the recent DSA General Assembly in Kenya, are now being put into action across the region.

From August 25th to 30th, the Eastern Zone Assembly, hosted in Uganda, provided a platform for deeper reflection on these missions. A key highlight was a powerful talk on Justice and Peace delivered by Fr. Evans Sokota. Drawing on the legacy of their founder, St. Dominic, Fr. Sokota emphasized that true justice and peace are rooted in right relationships, the defense of the poor, and a commitment to reconciliation. He underscored that peace is the natural outcome of living with truth and love.

In a tangible display of their dedication to environmental stewardship, Sisters in all four countries of the Eastern Zone have been actively involved in tree-planting activities. This grassroots effort is a direct response to the increasing effects of climate change and a practical way to contribute to a healthier planet.
